Films like American Movie, Clerks, Ghost World, The Big Lebowski just as a few examples.

For example, in The Post i didnt need Spielberg to have like 4 or 5 asides throughout the film telling me (almost looking at the camera) "journalism is important in times like these. Whereas they now pander and spoon feed themes to the viewer. Themes used to be shown to the viewer rather than outright beating them over the head with the themes. You can see this trend of infantilizing adults even in filmmaking. I dont think taking a game night seriously is necessarily childish, but the petty way it is done in the film does border on childishness. I think all of these slacker/man as child movies basically exaggerate and maybe normalize childish behavior that adults exhibit. And maybe the younger guy who was dating the older woman?īut i think a lot of the characters exhibited childish behavior: Bateman is still struggling to manage relationship with his older brother that stems from his childhood, he and his wife have trouble navigating the awkwardness with their neighbor, all of the main characters take the competition of the game night to extreme levels. The older brother character sort of qualifies.
